You are looking at the main “Cabin” and today has a new look inside and out. It is a one room cabin with 21 bunks…. That’s right… 7 triple decker’s! It has a kitchen on the north end (left side) and had a wood stove for heat. It got winterized in the mid 70’s but ask an old timer about waking up with snow on your sleeping bag in the 60’s… aaahh.. The old days.
Welcome! This is Boot Lake Scout Camp! You’ve arrived 125 miles north of the Twin Cities, 6 miles north of Big Sandy Lake in Aitkin County, Minnesota. The camp property was purchased in February 1954 and the camp established by the people of Troop 167 in Mounds View and Spring Lake Park, Minnesota. They formed a corporation to own and maintain the camp called “The Frontiersmen”. Today this organization is maintaining the camp with first, second, and now third generation of Scouters.
In 2016 and 2017 we worked with a local contractor to update the building so it will be around for the next generation or more of Scouters. The outside got a new look and insulated walls! That’s right, the vertical logs were covered with paneling on the inside of the Cabin in the 70’s and that was it. At least we didn’t wake up to snow on the sleeping bag. Hey, after all, it is a outdoor camp. It got painted in the summer 2017 to match as the last wall an roof was completed.
Chef Don prepares a hearty breakfast for a group at a “Work Party” weekend. It is when the 12-20 guys (Frontiersmen) get together 2-3 times a year to either open the camp for the season or tuck it away for the winter. These weekends are when major repair and maintenance is accomplished. Often, Chef Don is cooking for 20 hungry guys! He is working away in the kitchen end of the main “The Cabin”.
This is what the remodeled Cabin Kitchen looks like today. Propane griddle and stove. Mouse proof cupboards! Still no plumbing to the sinks. There just to wash dishes in during winter.
